St Cadoc’s Bell Ringers

The St Cadoc’s Bell Ringers are a friendly group who keep alive the centuries-old tradition of church bell ringing in Caerleon. We ring for Sunday services, weddings, special occasions, and community events — sharing the sound of the bells with the whole town.

Whether you’re an experienced ringer or have never touched a bell rope before, you’ll find a warm welcome here.

  •     Sunday ringing & special occasions: We ring before main services and for weddings, national celebrations, and local events — sharing the joyful sound of bells.
  •     Practice nights: A chance to learn, improve, and enjoy the fellowship of the band.
  •     Simulator training: Our ringing chamber includes a teaching simulator, allowing beginners to practise safely without the bells sounding outside.
  •     Handbells: Occasionally used on open days and special events, giving children and families the chance to join in.

Bell ringing is more than just making a sound — it’s being part of a living tradition that stretches back centuries. Ringers enjoy the rhythm, teamwork, and mental focus it brings, as well as the joy of creating something beautiful together. Once you’ve learned, it’s a skill you can take with you anywhere: towers across the UK and beyond welcome visiting ringers. Most of all, ringing is fun — you’ll make friends, share laughter, and be part of a community that stretches far beyond the tower.

And of course, you’ll be helping to play the largest musical instrument in the world!

“I started ringing just a few years ago, and now I can’t imagine life without it. It’s a mix of challenge, fun, and friendship that keeps me coming back every week.” — A member of the St Cadoc’s band

Bell ringing is open to everyone — no matter your background, faith, or beliefs. People of all religions and none are welcome to take part. It’s also open to all ages, generally from 10 years and above. No musical knowledge or previous experience is needed, and strength isn’t required — ringing is about technique rather than force. It’s a great way to learn a new skill, keep active, and make friends. Training is given by experienced ringers, and we support learners at every stage.

St Cadoc’s has had bells since at least 1660, making them an enduring part of the town’s heritage. Over the centuries the ring was enlarged, recast, and rehung — most recently in 1953 to celebrate the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. Today, the tower proudly houses a full octave of eight bells in the key of B-flat, each mounted for traditional full-circle ringing, continuing a tradition that has lasted for generations. The bells are still rung regularly, linking the past with the present.

How Heavy Are They?

The bells vary greatly in size:

These comparisons help give a sense of the impressive weight being rung high above the town!
